Barns, Stables, Horse Arenas and more:

Barns and Stables:

The American barn has been a symbol of agriculture since the Pilgrims built the first examples soon after they arrived in New England in 1620.  They represent the strength and character of the hearty folks that

created them.  Barns were used to store the harvest, protect milk cows, stable horses and house the other functions necessary to managing the farm.

As pioneers moved west and settled new territory, barns were incorporated into their communities.  Many barns appeared on the landscape to support the farms and ranches of that era.  Forms were basic and construction techniques simple.  It was necessary to create usable space in a short period of time with the material close at hand.

The design of a barn is an exercise in creating space, high and wide lofty places for animals, storage and other agricultural functions. They are built to be strong and durable with the ability to sustain the rigors of wind, snow and rough activity. Barns are functional, laid out to facilitate animal husbandry, feeding, milking and maintenance.

Stables are barns with a specific function, to house, protect and breed horses. Safety is a primary concern, the safety of the animals as well as of the people who work them. Stalls and passages need to be sized properly and built of heavy continuous surfaces. Doors must operate smoothly with simple, convenient latches. Protection is necessary for wiring. Floors are sloped to facilitate proper drainage and adequate natural ventilation is a must.

In modern times barns are also used for the maintenance and storage of vehicles and heavy equipment. Environmental concerns are introduced which relate to the storage and transfer of fuels and chemicals. Fire safety becomes a more acute concern. Heating and lighting systems that enhance the spaces for repair work are additional considerations.

Barns are usually unique to the entity that they support. A well thought out plan that relates to the specific utilization of the building will enhance its operation over time. If you need a fine barn with a traditional image to enhance your operation, give us a call at 1-800-576-3808
